Removal of Hydrogen Peroxide Residuals and By-Product Bromate from Advanced Oxidation Processes by Granular Activated Carbon

During drinking water treatment, advanced oxidation process (AOP) with O3 and H2O2 may result in by-products, residual BrO3?. The containing BrO3? often flows into subsequent granular activated carbon (GAC) filters. A concentrated solution can be used as GAC modification reagent at 60 °C to improve its adsorption ability. However, whether low concentrations of residuals from AOP modify GAC, the impact on removal by filter ambient temperature, is unknown. This study evaluated surface functional groups effect GAC. Results showed that both were effectively removed virgin while pre-loaded regenerated GACs but not anymore. At temperature 150 µmol/L consumed large amounts groups, which resulted decrease presence residuals. Redox reactions between played a dominant role only small amount was adsorption. higher pH, less more observed.
